titleUI/UX Principles #7: Goal-Gradient Effect
The closer to the goal, the more motivated the user becomes. Clark Hull proved in 1932 with rats: Speed increases when the goal visibly approaches. This also applies to humans in digital processes.
Practical Application: Progress bars in multi-step forms, "Only 2 more steps until order completion", pre-filled loyalty programs with initial points. Even artificial progress motivates continuation.
Result: Drastically reduced abandonment rates in checkout processes, higher form completion rates, more completed registrations. Users who see progress abandon less frequently.
